Virago Women’s Workshop at FiLiA 2022
We couldn’t miss this! The highlight of the feminist year, a celebration of sisterhood – of course we’re going.
FiLiA embodies the spirit we strive to live by at Virago Women’s Workshop. We love the energy, creativity, emotion and power of the event. It’s about the coming together of so many women from all walks of life, united by our sex and unafraid to speak. We always take a piece of it home to last through the year and into the next one. Previous events, including just down the road in Bradford, have played a major role in inspiring the establishment of our women’s creative space – and after last year’s, in Portsmouth, we wanted to take it in a bold new direction.
Over the past twelve months, we’ve held craft workshops including wreath making, zine creation, and a runaway art course that is so popular that it wouldn’t end and we had to keep doing it. We’ve created a completely unique library of women’s writing and historical magazines, with the help of women of Leeds, their groaning bookshelves and their memories of years of activism and laughter.
What we’re doing hasn’t really been done before, and we need to fund our growth into the future. Our events are usually drop-in and priced accessibly. We also offer a membership scheme, which gives women the opportunity to personally be part of our unique, radical enterprise. We also welcome donations, small or large. It is your support that enables us to offer this space to the women and girls of Leeds and beyond, and we would be delighted to continue to do so in the years to come.
With your help we can provide that rare thing, a genuinely women-only space for those who want to learn new skills, enjoy a cuppa and put the world to rights, discuss books, or perhaps even the odd illegal luncheon for holders of beliefs worthy of respect in a democratic society.
Our approachable and friendly volunteers will be (wo)manning our stall at FiLiA 2022 – look out for our fabulous hand-painted banners. Have a go at some printing, tell us what you’d like to see us do, become a member (new members will receive a free crafty goody bag), plan a visit, or offer to run a workshop!
